In October of 2010 Durham Marketplace took on a massive multi-thousand dollar project to renovate and update their 43 year old energy inefficient freezer and refrigeration systems. The addition of new state of the art condensers, compressors and LED lighting throughout the new frozen foods section, helped pushed Durham Marketplace to an elite group of environmentally friendly grocery retailers. These upgrades will save the store 98,130 kWh and a $10,349 savings per year. Their oil consumption will now decrease 6,771 gallons per year! Their CO2 output, a contributor to greenhouse gases will decrease by over 180 lbs a year, SO2 output, a cause of acid rain will reduce by 172lbs a year and the NOx output, also a cause of acid rain will decrease by 53 lbs a year! Durham Marketplace has not only improved the energy efficiency of the store but most importantly they have contributed to their mission of helping to save the environment. Their significant improvements gained the attention of PSNH and Durham Marketplace was recently congratulated with an "energy efficient" check for meeting PSNH's green standards. "Durham Marketplace is here for the long term and we'll do everything we can to contribute to the well being of our community and the earth." Says store owner Chuck Cressy.
